Dr Joanne Marshall, Dr Ian James and colleagues at Cumbria, Northumberland, Tyne and Wear NHS Foundation Trust have created a video for care home staff supporting people with a dementia through COVID-19.
They suggest 8 fundamental needs that all people share:
- to physical comfortable and freedom from pain
- to feel safe and secure, not feeling vulnerable
- to feel love and sense of belonging
- to self esteem, to feel valued and treated with dignity and respect
- to have control and choice over oneself and the environment with choices respected
- to experience meaningful physical contact
- to experience fun, to play and laugh
- to experience meaningful occupation and give purpose
The video discusses the challenges faced when meeting the 8 fundamental needs in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic and show how some care homes have creatively tackled these issues. Click here for access to the video
