Amanda King is an NHS Occupational Therapist studying on the NIHR-funded Masters in Research Methods (Health) at the University of Nottingham. She is conducting a small empirical study as part of her dissertation (which forms the basis of PhD proposal) the title of this is: Care homes for older people and access to outdoor mobility, activities and spaces
This study aims to establish if access to outdoor mobility, activities and spaces is important to older people who live in care homes. Semi-structured interviews will be conducted with a maximum of five people; two residents, a care assistant, a family member and a care home manager. In addition, a questionnaire will be completed with twenty care home managers and/or senior care staff, to identify the practices of care homes regarding access to outdoor mobility, activities and spaces.
At present there is no specific intervention that aims to increase outdoor mobility for older people living in care homes and there is no rigorous published data that describes the problem. The long term aim is to develop and evaluate an evidence based outdoor mobility rehabilitation programme suitable for use in care homes. In this small study, Amanda will be measuring the problem and looking for possible answers.
